Our story begins in 1875 at the corner of Main & Water Street in downtown Loudonville, OH, where a brand new store has just opened it’s doors by the name of Hartupee & Reed. In March of 1885 a share of the business is sold to a man by the name of George Franklin Raby, who acquires the remaining shares in April of 1900. From that moment forward, the business would go by the name of G.F. Raby Hardware. In 1909, Raby purchased the building at 223 W. Main for $4,500 (approx. $200,000 today) and moved Raby Hardware there, where it has remained ever since. In 1991, the business expanded into the space adjacent to the west.
After five generations, the Raby family continues to operate the business. In 2022 Dave Raby passed the torch to his daughter Jilian Raby, making her the first woman to become sole owner of the business since it’s conception at the turn of the century. In 2025, the Raby family look forward to celebrating 140 years of business in Loudonville.
